Tips: Prophylaxis against floodwater disease

The three days non-stop rain due to the monsoon rain have caused flooding in Metro Manila. Many had to wade thru the floods to help rescue, to go home, to evacuate and for whatever reasons. the danger of floodwater disease, especially leptospirosis, is real.

So, for those who waded in floodwater during the three days non-stop rain, suggested Prophylaxis for Leptospirosis:

LOW Risk Exposure:
( History of wading WITHOUT wounds )
- Doxycycline 100 mg/cap, 2 caps as single dose within 24-72 hours on a FULL stomach

MODERATE Risk Exposure:
( History of wading WITH open wounds / scratch )
- Doxycycline 200 mg once daily for 3-5 days.

HIGH Risk Exposure
( Continuous exposure especially if exposed for several days- yung araw-araw nasa baha )
- Doxycycline 200 mg once weekly until the end of exposure.

Contra-indicated for PREGNANT PATIENTS and CHILDREN below 8 years old.

Prophylaxis is NOT 100% Protective. Monitor of fever, chills, muscle pains, calf pains, jaundice and decreasing urine output 2-21 days after exposure .

Remember also to wash feet thoroughly. Keep yourself dry at all times. Drinking a lot of clean water will boost your system, couple it with immunustimulants like fruits and vegies.

The Bible reminds us to always take precautionary measures. In Proverbs 2:11, it tells us,  "Carefulness will protect you..." God bless and keep safe friends...
